Since 2010, there have been 2,054 people under the age of 25 killed on our roads
Of those deaths:
1,465 were male
- 782 were passengers
- 707 took place between 10pm and 6am
- 926 took place at speeds of 80km/h and under
The road is an incredibly dangerous place for young people. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for Australians aged between 1-14, and the second most common cause of death for Australians aged between 15-24.
Of all hospitalisations of young Australians, almost half are drivers involved in a road traffic crash. Since 2000, 32% of all road-based fatalities have been aged under 25, yet drivers under the age of 25 represent between 10-15% of all licensed drivers.*
Young people are risk takers. But that’s not their fault. The rational part of a teen’s brain isn’t fully developed and won’t be until age 25 or so.
For most young people, getting your licence is a rite of passage, a new found freedom. But that freedom comes with immense responsibility, not just to themselves but to their passengers and all other road users.
Whilst they can learn from the example set by their parents, the best way to ensure young people are safe on the roads is to establish accountability for their actions.
